Think about how you will use the new room and how it will connect with the rest of the house. A bedroom, office or studio may have different needs for storage, daylight, privacy and electrical points. If an en-suite is wanted, plumbing routes and ventilation need to be considered alongside the layout rather than added as an afterthought. The stair position also matters: it uses floor area and must connect safely to the existing circulation.
