Red sandstone, Dawlish Water and the seafront
Dawlish sits at the mouth of Dawlish Water, known locally as The Brook, between red sandstone cliffs, with the Brunel sea wall and Riviera Line running along the beach. The Brook has a history of flooding, and easterly storms can send waves and surges along the seafront in winter. Extensions and repairs near the front are best detailed for driving rain and spray, with external work timed to make the building weathertight early.
Around 110 listed buildings lie within about two kilometres of the centre, and the old core of the town sits inland around the parish church of St Gregory. Where garden walls or boundaries need rebuilding in older parts of town, matching the local red sandstone can keep repairs in character.
