Bathroom renovation planned around your home

A bathroom renovation should improve how the room works as well as how it looks. Plumbing routes, ventilation, waterproofing and the order of work all influence the result. ADB SW’s renovation work includes bathroom and en-suite installations across South Devon. Send photographs, your intended layout and the fittings you have in mind so we can discuss the building work, service requirements and practical arrangements for carrying out the project in your home.

Start with the layout and everyday use

Consider who uses the bathroom and what needs to change. You might want a shower instead of a bath, better storage or fittings that are easier to reach and clean. Check door swings, usable space around sanitaryware and access to controls. Choosing a larger shower tray is only helpful if the remaining room still works comfortably for the household.

An en-suite needs the same care within a smaller footprint. Its position affects drainage, water supplies, ventilation and the adjoining bedroom. Existing waste routes may limit where a toilet or shower can sensibly go. Share product dimensions before ordering so the proposed layout can be checked against service connections, wall construction and the space needed for installation and maintenance.

Strip out and understand the existing room

The strip-out should be planned around safe disconnection, removal of fittings and protection of the route through the house. Tiles and floor coverings can conceal damaged backgrounds or signs of leaks. Once exposed, walls and floors need checking before new finishes are applied. Covering an unstable or moisture-damaged surface would leave the underlying problem in place.

Agree how unexpected findings will be discussed before extra work proceeds. Repairs to flooring, wall preparation or changes to old plumbing can affect the installation sequence. The written scope should describe the preparation allowed for and distinguish it from work that depends on opening up. Confirm waste removal and any fixtures you want retained rather than assuming everything removed will be discarded.

Coordinate plumbing, tiling and ventilation

Plumbing and electrical first fix should match the final layout, including shower controls, lighting, heating and extractor positions. Check that the proposed shower arrangement suits the available water system. Electrical equipment must be appropriate for its bathroom location, with relevant work undertaken by suitably competent specialists. Service routes and access for future maintenance should be resolved before walls and floors are closed.

Wet areas need a suitable waterproofing system beneath the decorative finish where required; tiles and grout alone should not be treated as the entire waterproofing detail. Discuss backgrounds, junctions and sealing alongside tile sizes and patterns. Ventilation also needs an effective route to outside, not simply an attractive grille. Its design should address moisture removal and the relevant Building Regulations requirements.

Sequence the work in an occupied home

Tell us if this is the only bathroom or toilet in the property. There will be stages when facilities cannot be used, and those periods need discussing before work begins. Temporary arrangements depend on the home and scope; do not assume a toilet or shower can remain available throughout. Drying and curing times for preparation, tiling and sealing also affect the return to normal use.

For an enquiry, include your location, photographs, approximate room dimensions and any chosen sanitaryware or drawings. Explain whether you want a straightforward replacement or a changed layout. ADB SW can discuss the renovation scope and practical sequence. Agree what the quotation includes for strip-out, services, waterproofing, tiling, ventilation and making good, together with supply responsibilities and any decoration outside the bathroom.

Common questions

Can an existing bathroom layout be changed?

Often it can, but drainage routes, water supplies, structure and available space need checking. Send the proposed arrangement before ordering fittings so the practical implications can be discussed alongside the room design.

Can you discuss an en-suite installation?

Yes. Bathroom and en-suite installations form part of ADB SW’s renovation work. Share the proposed location and layout so we can consider plumbing routes, ventilation, partitions and the relationship with the adjoining rooms.

Can we stay at home during a bathroom renovation?

That depends on access and the facilities available elsewhere in the home. Explain whether this is your only bathroom. Agree the periods without washing or toilet facilities and any temporary arrangements before the work starts.
